AUTHENTIC CENTURIES-OLD RUSSIAN RECIPE
DRINK OF THE CZARS
It’s disputed whether vodka was first produced in Russia or Poland—there’s talk of vodka being produced in Russia in the 9th Century, and in Poland in the 8th Century, but these were both likely crude precursors. The first written record in Poland was in the Sandomierz Court Registry in 1405, while Russia didn’t get “vodka” to paper until 1751. Chances are, some form of vodka distillation was going on in both countries for centuries.
Vodka Fact: Vodka is a distilled beverage composed primarily of water and ethanol, sometimes with traces of impurities and flavorings. Vodka is made by the distillation of fermented substances such as grains, potatoes, or sometimes fruits or sugar.Since vodka is distilled from water ethanol and fermented potatoes or grains, it contains very little fusel oils–much less than other alcoholic beverages. This coupled with the fact that it is carbon filtered, makes it one of the purest drinks in the world!
In Russia, vodka is almost always consumed with food. Not Red Bull, not tonic, not a few good friends and a story of heartbreak. It’s taken with food, “zakuski,” or little plates of this and that to go with your drink(ing). It’s kind of like Russian tapas, except here they’re not just keeping you on your feet, they’re also meant to guard your stomach against the fiery onslaught of vodka
Imagine you’re on a yacht, sailing through the ocean and enjoying a martini. The water is nice, so naturally you decide to take a dip. You’re swimming, suddenly you feel something brush against your leg, and a shooting pain. Turns out you’ve been stung by a jellyfish. Hopefully you haven’t finished that vodka, because you’ll need to pour that baby over your leg to soothe the pain and disinfect the wound.
